Within the tall trees of the Unending Forest, Princess Lila lived in a large castle with light blue walls and a stone gate.
Lila had a great love for small animals and was constantly wandering off into the darkest parts of the forest to find them. One day, after getting bored with a game of hopscotch, she skipped down a grassy path, then ran past a pond where snakes and toads lived, and finally stopped to catch her breath in the middle of a small grouping of trees. Suddenly, she heard the tiny purring of a lonely kitten who had lost its parents. Lila reached down and picked up the small, damp creature. It was a black kitten, soaked to the bone and filthy.
She hurried back to the castle with the cat curled in her arms. “I'’ll call you, Pretchert,” she said with an English accent. “You’re going to love all of the other animals in my bedroom.”
Lila gave Pretchert some warm milk and a bath and made a small bed by stuffing some old pillows into a basket. Pretchert loved his new bed and slept beside Princess Lila's bed, which was covered in pink silk with ruffles.
“Now we’re all a family,” said Lila as she looked around her room. She had a rabbit in a small cardboard box, an injured owl that lived in a birdcage hung from the ceiling, a young goat who was allowed to roam all around the room and a hamster who did the same. Now that she had Pretchert, there were five little creatures to keep her company. But it wouldn’t be long before Princess Lila would add another pet to her collection. Much to her father’s dismay, she was always bringing home a new family member.
